Q. What makes liposuction so popular?

Cosmetic Surgeon: Liposuction targets your trouble spots to create a slimmer, more proportional shape. It attacks the fat you thought you could never lose. In just a few hours, liposuction can permanently remove fat to smooth out unsightly bulges.

Q. What steps should I take before having liposuction?

Cosmetic Surgeon: It is important to be in relatively good shape before your procedure, and preferably near or at your ideal weight. You should be committed to maintaining your weight by eating a healthy diet and getting regular exercise.

I also suggest you take time to learn as much as you can about this body contouring procedure. If you decide to have the procedure, you will need to have a thorough consultation and a complete physical examination. Some patients also have to adjust their medications prior to surgery.

Q. Is liposuction a weight-loss surgery?

Cosmetic Surgeon: No, it is a body contouring procedure recommended for individuals who are at or near their ideal weight. Liposuction surgery is most successful when used to combat fat in specific areas of the body that have not responded to diet and exercise. It is sometimes performed in conjunction with weight-loss or bariatric surgery to enhance the result of that procedure.

Q. After three pregnancies, my abdominal muscles are loose and saggy. Would you recommend a tummy tuck or liposuction?

Cosmetic Surgeon: It depends on a number of factors including the elasticity of your skin, your weight, skin tone and personal goals. Many people confuse liposuction surgery with abdominoplasty (“tummy tuck”) because they are both performed to improve the appearance of your abdominal area. Liposuction is sometimes performed in conjunction with a tummy tuck to address more than one issue.

Generally speaking, liposuction is recommended when you have a pocket of fat that won’t go away no matter how much you exercise. A tummy tuck can tighten skin that has become lax.

Your best bet is to consult with an experienced plastic surgeon.

Q. What if I gain weight after liposuction?

Cosmetic Surgeon: Liposuction permanently removes fat in the specific area that is treated. If you gain weight following liposuction surgery, you will accumulate fat largely in untreated areas. For example, if you had your hips and abdomen suctioned, their overall contour will remain relatively unaltered.
