Guarino, James

A Philadelphia native, Dr. James Guarino studied at LaSalle University and Temple University School of Medicine, followed by a fellowship in cardiology at Hershey Medical Center. Now a diagnostic cardiologist practicing at Central Bucks Specialists and Doylestown Hospital, Dr. Guarino treats patients with all types of cardiac conditions.

How did you decide to become a cardiologist?

It was during my medical residency at Temple University Hospital in Philadelphia. Temple has a strong cardiology program, and I found myself drawn to this area of medicine.

What is a diagnostic cardiologist?

We diagnose and treat cardiovascular diseases and offer a full range of care for coronary artery disease, heart arrhythmia, congenital heart disease, heart valve problems and congestive heart failure. Our focus is the entire person; patients receive options that include medication, dietary adjustments, exercise and surgery.

What advances have you seen in the field of cardiology over the past several years?

The success rate for angioplasty has dramatically increased. We used to see people coming back for repeat procedures. Now, with the use of coated stents, the success rate has risen tremendously. It used to be around 70 percent, but now it's about 95 percent.

What makes the Heart Center of Doylestown Hospital so respected for its cardiac care?

The Center is staffed by a group of highly trained and dedicated physicians and medical professionals. We have world-class cardiac surgeons who have trained at the Cleveland Clinic, one of the country's premier centers for open-heart surgery.

What is the most rewarding aspect of being a cardiologist?

I am able to care for patients when they first come into the hospital following a heart attack. I oversee all of their care in the Emergency Department, follow them through testing and serve as the communicator with family members. It is very rewarding to work with critically ill patients and help get them well again.
