The best way to live healthier at home is to make it a family affair. Parents should make a point to exercise and eat healthy with their kids. The C.A.N.D.L.E.S. program presented by our Nutrition Counseling Center can help families achieve those goals.

Designed especially for overweight children ages 8 to 11 and their parents, the program’s name says it all: Children and Nutrition, Developing Lifelong Eating and Exercise Skills. The six-week program teaches good health principles for families to use on their own.
“We focus on nutrition and exercise, plus self-esteem and communication,” explains Kristin Morrow, RD, LDN, CDE, nutrition therapist.
“Our first class is for parents only, where we cover dos and don’ts and our supportive philosophy. For instance, we never mention weight. We focus on healthy choices.”
During the program, parents and overweight kids learn how to choose nutritious foods. They exercise together and enjoy other fun events such as a scavenger hunt. A trip to a local grocery store helps the family learn to make smart selections when food shopping. The last class takes the families to a fast food restaurant so they can learn to make healthier choices when eating out.
