Sodium-reducing tips

Keep table salt off the table

Use these helpful hints to reduce the salt in your diet:

Cut back gradually. Give your taste buds a chance to adjust.

Replace salt with herbs and spices. You can reduce salt without reducing flavor.

Easy does it when using salt substitutes. Avoid the temptation to use twice as much to get the same taste. The sodium content may be just as high.

Limit processed and prepared foods. Salt is added not just for flavor but also as a preservative.

Don’t load up on condiments. These include ketchup, mustard, dressings, dips and soy sauce.

Choose fresh foods. Fresh meat, for example, has less salt than lunch meat.

Check labels. Shop for low-sodium foods.

The best advice is to use salt only when you need it.
