Stroke is the No. 1 cause of disability in women and men. But the effects can be controlled if you recognize the symptoms and get to the hospital right away.
The American Stroke Association advises that if you or someone you're with suddenly experiences any of these symptoms, call 911 - F.A.S.T. After a preliminary examination, the hospital emergency department staff may administer t-PA, a "clot-busting" medication used to dissolve the clot blocking blood flow to the brain. This can prevent disabilities, but must be administered within three hours after a stroke begins.
