Love Your Heart

Take these preventive steps to ward off heart disease

Every February, women are reminded to take care of themselves by loving their hearts. It can start with a gesture as simple as wearing a red dress (heart disease awareness) pin or taking a moment out of a busy day to take a few deep breaths. When we stop, even for a minute, to think about heart disease in women, we have already taken a small step to prevent it.

Heart disease may be the No. 1 cause of death in women, but it can be prevented in ways that are now well known. These include learning the warning signs of a heart attack ( see related article below), keeping up to date on recommended screenings, reducing stress and maintaining a heart-healthy diet and fitness plan. And listen up — have fun. It’s good for you.

Don't forget to have fun

That’s right, have fun. It will make heart-healthy living a joy instead of a chore. Here are just a few fun ways to “love your heart.”

Redefine exercise: Take a dance class • Join the mall walkers • Go on a scenic bike ride

Nourish your body: Take a heart-healthy cooking class • Start a heart-healthy dinner club • Find a great heart-healthy restaurant

Soothe your soul: Relax at the spa • Have a makeover • Practice yoga • Meditate or make other quiet time
