One way to reduce your risk for heart disease is to cut back on sodium, saturated fat and cholesterol. But that doesn’t mean you have to cut back on flavor.

The American Heart Association offers these tips for heart-healthy cooking:

  • Avoid salt. Instead use spices and herbs to enhance flavor.
  • Don’t fry in oil. Instead, stir-fry, broil or grill. When roasting, use a rack so the fat drips away, and baste with fat-free liquids like wine, tomato juice or lemon juice.
  • Trim the fat and cholesterol from recipes. Substitute ingredients to reduce saturated fat without sacrificing flavor.
