When a woman experiences crushing chest pain, she will probably react as expected by calling 911. But not all heart attacks present themselves this dramatically, particularly those of women. For women, the symptoms of heart attack are often more subtle than those of men. It's not unusual for a woman to have a heart attack and not even know it. Make sure you are familiar with the warning signs:

HIS AND HERS

These are the classic signs of heart attack in both men and women:

• Crushing pain or pressure in the center of the chest; it may last more than a few minutes, or it may diminish and return

• Pain or tightness that spreads to the back, neck, shoulder, jaws or arms

• Severe shortness of breath, sweating or nausea

HERS

Women also report experiencing these symptoms:

• Heart palpitations or chest discomfort with dizziness

• Persistent pain under the breastbone

• Trouble sleeping, anxiety

• Indigestion

• Extreme fatigue

Getting prompt medical treatment is important. Call 911 immediately if you suspect you are having a heart attack.
