Digital Mammography Finds Early Breast Cancer

The Hunterdon Regional Medical Center Breast Care program recommends digital mammograms for breast cancer screenings. Digital mammography offers faster, clearer and more accurate images than X-Ray.

The Hunterdon Regional Breast Care Program has a new home – and a powerful new tool for screening and detecting breast cancer. The new location, at the Kings Court Medical Arts Building in Flemington, features a state-of-the-art digital mammography system to provide physicians with clear and precise images of the breast. The system offers the largest field of view currently available, which is helpful in capturing images of patients with breasts of diverse shapes and sizes.

“Digital systems provide mammograms that are faster and easier than ever,” says Mark Malzberg, MD, radiologist at Hunterdon Medical Center. “They also give referring physicians extremely accurate images to use in diagnosis.”

Mammograms are among the best early detection methods, yet 13 million American women 40 years of age or older have never had a mammogram.

“This new digital technology provides both high precision accuracy and increased ease of use for our patients,” Dr. Malzberg notes.

There are many advantages to a digital system. The images are clear and easy to read and offer a better view of the breast, especially near the skin line, chest wall and in women with diverse breast tissue types. Because digital images are ready to read within 10 seconds, patients no longer have to wait around for X-ray films to be developed to make sure that the images are usable. Also, if a second opinion is needed, digital images can be sent electronically to consulting physicians almost instantly.
