Healthy Cooking Starts with Smart Shopping

  • Read nutrition labels. Look for low levels of saturated fat, cholesterol and sodium.
  • Buy fat-free and low-fat milk and dairy products.
  • Choose chicken and turkey, which have less fat than other meats.
  • Look for lean cuts of beef and pork, such as round, loin or leg.
  • Buy fish fillets, then bread and bake them yourself. Coatings on prepared fish sticks add to their fat content.
  • Fruits and vegetables make healthy snacks.
