The health benefits of swimming are well known, but today’s water workouts are not just about doing laps. From water aerobics to water yoga, there is a workout for just about everyone. Water has 12 times more resistance than air so any exercise you do in the water is great for toning and strengthening your body. Water is also easy on the joints, a real plus for people with arthritis or sports injuries.

Where can you start? By thinking of an activity that is fun for you. If you love to jog, you may want to invest in a pair of water fitness shoes. Water jogging is an incredible calorie burner that puts less stress on your knees than pounding the pavement.
If you like to dance, consider taking a water aerobics class at a gym. You can add resistance by using water weights (or buoys) during your workout. Or you can purchase an inexpensive water “noodle” or a kickboard to vary your workout with lively water calisthenics.
Of course, you don’t need any special equipment or skills to get a good workout. Simple routines of leg lifts, standing knee lifts, inner/outer thigh exercises, jumping jacks and water squats can work wonders on your figure. As with any new fitness plan, be sure to talk to your physician before you dive in.
