Exceptional Cancer Care Exceptionally Close By

Hunterdon Regional Cancer Center offers the best cancer care possible, close to home.

If you or someone you love has been diagnosed with cancer, you immediately want to find the best cancer care possible. Thanks to the Hunterdon Regional Cancer Center (HRCC), you don’t have to look far to find it.

Hunterdon Regional Cancer Center received an “Outstanding Achievement Award” by the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer. A very small percentage of hospitals that treat cancer receive this superior distinction. The honor was bestowed upon Hunterdon after a rigorous evaluation and review process.

“Community cancer centers were established originally for patient convenience, but it quickly became clear that quality couldn’t be sacrificed for convenience,” explains medical oncologist Myron Bednar, MD. “At HRCC, our interdisciplinary team works hard to ensure that patients receive the highest quality care in a conveniently located environment. In fact, our long-term survival statistics for many cancers exceed state and national averages.”

Interdisciplinary Team Coordinates Patient Care
HRCC employs a comprehensive team approach to patient care. The team is a collaborative effort led by board-certified medical and radiation oncologists and integrates the expertise of many healthcare professionals including specially trained nurses, radiation therapists, oncology social workers, dietitians and professionally trained administrative support staff.

Newest Technology in Imaging and Radiation
Hunterdon uses a full range of state-of-the-art on-site imaging technology to diagnose cancer and guide treatment. These include: MRI, PET/ CT scanning, digital mammography, ultrasound and more.

Hunterdon also offers the most sophisticated radiation technology available today. Radiation therapy uses high-energy rays to damage cancer cells and keep them from growing and dividing. Among the treatments available at Hunterdon are: external-beam radiation therapy, intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) and brachytherapy.

Access to Groundbreaking Clinical Trials
This year, HRCC celebrates 15 years of affiliation with the nationally renowned Fox Chase Cancer Center. Hunterdon patients have access to the latest in cancer research, diagnosis, prevention, treatment and education, including groundbreaking clinical research trials, which are administered by specially trained staff.

“Availability of clinical research at HRCC allows our patients to receive the latest cancer therapies in their own community and lessens the burden of traveling to distant academic institutions,” says Dr. Bednar.

Complementary Therapies Help Patients Heal
Hunterdon Healthcare System offers complementary therapies for use in conjunction with radiation therapy, chemotherapy and/or surgery to help patients cope with cancer-related symptoms and the side effects of their treatments, as well as to help reduce stress, anxiety and depression. Complementary therapies include acupuncture, guided imagery, meditation, reiki and reflexology.

Support When You Need It the Most
HRCC provides an abundance of education and support programs where patients can learn more about their diagnosis, treatment, new research, communication and coping skills and share community resources. HRCC also offers a Treatment Orientation Class to all patients and their supports. The class introduces the staff and services offered at HRCC.

Stopping Cancer Before It Starts
Research has proven that some types of cancer are preventable, while others, if detected early enough, are curable. HRCC’s staff is committed to educating the public on cancer prevention and early detection through educational programs, cancer screenings and genetic risk assessments.
