Experts at HMC diagnose and treat children with autism

"There's no cure for autism, but early treatment can make a remarkable difference," explains Audrey Mars, MD, a neurodevelopmental pediatrician at Hunterdon Medical Center's Child Development Center. Dr. Mars is currently researching the causes of autism.

According to the National Institutes of Health, autism is a complex developmental disorder that results in social interaction problems, communication difficulties, and restrictive or repetitive interests and behaviors. Experts estimate that some form of autism may affect anywhere from one in 500 to one in 1,000 children.

Dr. Mars leads a team of experts at HMC who help diagnose and treat children with this disorder. The team - which includes play, speech and physical therapists; learning consultants; social workers; and psychologists - works together to ensure that all the children's needs are met.

"We believe that knowledge is the most important thing for families who are dealing with autism," she says.

The Child Development Center includes a staff of more than 45 professionals who care for hundreds of children with physical and developmental delays. Services include an early intervention program for infants and toddlers, a resource and referral service for children with multiple health needs, pediatric rehabilitation and therapeutic services, evaluations for children with school-related problems, a speech development program, and pediatric hearing services.
