Bites from Mosquitoes and Ticks – Most mosquito and tick bites are annoying and itchy, but not harmful. Danger exists when the bite is from a black-legged deer tick that can result in Lyme disease. Additionally, some mosquitoes can transmit West Nile virus. So, use an insect repellent with DEET to avoid being gnawed by these insects.
Foodborne Illness – Most people think of undercooked meats or salads with mayonnaise as the main summer sources of food contamination. The cause, however, is often contaminated produce such as fresh lettuce, melons and tomatoes. So be sure to wash fruits and vegetables before eating, keep raw and cooked foods separate, and wash your hands thoroughly while working with food. In addition, consider getting the hepatitis A vaccine since this virus is also spread through contaminated food and water. The CDC recommends anyone with chronic hepatitis B should receive this vaccine to avoid getting infected with another serious liver virus.
