A Time to Give

A letter from Joan Block, Co-Founder of the Hepatitis B Foundation

Reflecting on the activities of the Hepatitis B Foundation this past year makes me realize that for us, it is always a time to give. Our mission includes helping to improve the lives of all those affected by hepatitis B, a commitment we take seriously.

After seven years, our national B Informed patient conference continues to be the only one of its kind, giving patients and families the unique opportunity to connect with one another in a supportive environment. For many, this is the only time they may meet others face to face who live with chronic hepatitis B – and this is a powerful experience for all of us.

The recent publication by our public health research department gives hope because it highlights the urgent need for an accurate count of Americans with chronic hepatitis B to ensure adequate funding and resources for those affected.

Our B Counted campaign also gained momentum with the recent approval of a $1 million budget increase in 2008 for the CDC’s Division of Viral Hepatitis, which is the direct result of our successful advocacy efforts.

Building the ranks of future scientists is a key theme because research is the cornerstone of our mission. We have created summer college internships and a high school science enrichment program for students to pursue research opportunities in our labs. Both of these initiatives give young people the encouragement to consider a research career and to learn about the global problem of hepatitis B. Maybe someday one of them will help find the cure!

This is certainly the time of year to think about giving. We hope that all of you who believe in the mission and the good work of the Hepatitis B Foundation continue to support our efforts to give to those who need us most through our research, outreach and patient advocacy efforts. Thank you!
