When a parent is diagnosed with cancer, the whole family is affected. Often times, kids suffer the most, afraid to talk about their fears. What better way to help kids who have a parent with cancer than to offer them a support network of other kids who know what they are going through?
That's where Kids Konnected Philadelphia comes in
Kids Konnected is a support network run by kids whose lives have been touched by cancer. It is now available locally, thanks to Morgan Holtz, age 16, who has seen the impact the Kids Konnected organization can have on kids since she was a little girl. Her brother, Jon Wagner-Holtz, started the program 12 years ago when their mother was diagnosed with breast cancer, with a phone line in his bedroom, as a way of reaching out to other kids. Today, Kids Konnected is a nationwide non-profit organization with branches in 12 states, including southeast Pennsylvania, a tribute to Jon and his understanding that kids need support too.
Pottstown Memorial Medical Center (PMMC) also recognizes the need for this kind of teen support and works closely with Kids Konnected Philadelphia, the local chapter
Morgan Holtz started when her family moved to the area. Together the hospital and Kids Konnected offer a wealth of resources and comfort for both kids and families.
"We were hooked on this dynamic group from the start," says Jonathan Nalli, PMMC's Chief Operating Officer. "We are excited to be one of the initial partners in launching Kids Konnected Philadelphia, not only for our area but for the East Coast. The group puts kids at ease, educating them at a different level. This program serves a need that can sometimes be overlooked and is a valuable addition to Pottstown Memorial Regional Cancer Center's vast number of complimentary therapies, resources and support groups."
Whenever they need it, wherever they are, kids can call the 24-hour toll-free hotline and connect with a friendly voice, often times Morgan Holtz herself. In addition, Kids Konnected publishes monthly newsletters and sponsors a chat room so kids can keep in touch. Local monthly support group meetings provide great opportunities for answering questions and socialization outside the home.

"I have felt more secure since I've been coming to the groups. It helps when I am depressed; it helps to know there are other kids dealing with cancer too."
