The American Cancer Society Relay for Life of Pottstown has been proclaimed the eighth largest relay in the world, after raising $658,562 in 2006, bringing its 10-year total to over $2 million. Relay for Life is a fun-filled overnight walk-a-thon that brings together members of the community who have been touched by cancer to raise money for the American Cancer Society. During the event, teams of family members, neighbors, friends and co-workers take turns walking or running laps. Each team attempts to keep at least one team member on the track at all times.
Pottstown Memorial Medical Center (PMMC) was instrumental in the launch of Pottstown’s first Relay for Life 10 years ago. Debbie Kurtz, Assistant Patient Care Manager of the Cancer Center, helped organize the first Pottstown event in 1997. PMMC continues to support this worthwhile cause, donating thousands of dollars each year. Additionally, several of the hospital’s departments form teams each year, including maternity, radiology, the OR and the Cancer Center, together with hospital staff and patients.
The Relay for Life is held in 23 countries throughout the world.
The United States holds over 4,500 relays, of which over 200 are run in Pennsylvania alone. The efforts of Pottstown Relay for Life participants proudly contribute to the American Cancer Society’s 2015 goal of reducing the incidence of cancer by 25 percent and reducing cancer deaths by 50 percent.
