Before being discharged with her new baby, Meredith McCarraher and her family are presented with a smoke detector, courtesy of a program initiated by local firefighters from Phillies Fire Company, Empire Hook and Ladder and Good Will Fire/Rescue and Ambulance. This joint project, Operation Save-A-Life II, ensures every baby born at PMMC goes home with a smoke detector.

The National Fire Protection Association says:

• One-third of all the homes in America are not adequately protected with smoke detectors.
• Nearly half of the home fires occurred in homes with no smoke detectors.
• In recent years, roughly three-fifths of home-fire deaths have occurred in homes without smoke detectors.
