At Pottstown Memorial Medical Center (PMMC), we’ve worked hard to keep pace with our growing community by adding and expanding new services. We now stand at the threshold of a series of major expansions and renovations to our hospital campus.
“We’ve seen rapid growth in our area, and these improvements will help us keep pace with the increased demand for quality healthcare services,” says John Kristel, Associate CEO at PMMC.

In the next few months, we’ll be moving ahead with the following projects:
Progressive Care Unit (PCU) Expansion: The PCU houses patients who don’t require the intensive nursing provided to more critically ill patients in the Intensive Care Unit, but do need more nursing care than what is provided in the general nursing units. We plan to add 12 private rooms to this unit, which will include their own private bathrooms. This extra capacity will free up beds in the ICU and ensure that every patient receives appropriate attention while maintaining privacy and comfort.
New Intensive Care Unit (ICU): We will be building a new ICU on the fourth floor, with 16 private rooms, to care for our most critically ill patients.
New Endoscopy Unit: We’ll be moving our endoscopy unit to the second floor of the Outpatient Care Pavilion and expanding its capacity from three to four procedure rooms to meet an increased demand for colon cancer screenings. This relocation will make this outpatient service much more convenient for our patients.
New Wound Care/Hyperbaric Medicine Department: A unit on our Lower Level will be the home for our new wound care and hyperbaric oxygen department. Hyperbaric medicine uses pressurized oxygen to enhance the body’s ability to fight infection and heal wounds. The treatments are administered while patients lie in cylinders called hyperbaric chambers while breathing pure, pressurized oxygen. Hyperbaric therapy is typically one part of a comprehensive treatment plan for chronic or nonhealing wounds.
Other renovations and upgrades will include:
Throughout the planning process, physicians and nurses, as well as the hospital administration, have worked closely with the architects to ensure that the design keeps efficiency, comfort and quality care for our patients first and foremost. The first stage of construction began in September, and at no point will any service be stopped or interrupted.
“Two years ago, we completed an expansion of our Emergency Room (ER) that updated our technology and tripled our capacity. Consequently, we’re now able to care for twice as many patients as we did before” says Mr. Kristel. “The layout and design of the ER, as well as the processes and methods we used to complete the renovation, have been used as a model for other hospitals nationwide. We expect the same success from these projects.”
In addition to our building projects, we have also recruited new surgeons and specialists and have expanded our primary care capabilities with a new office in Limerick.
We hope that you share our excitement for making PMMC an even better home for your health care.
