Q: I don't wear shorts because of unsightly veins. What causes them?
Doctor: Smaller veins are called spider veins: small blue or red blood vessels that appear primarily on the legs but occasionally elsewhere. Varicose veins are larger, dilated blood vessels that are raised above the skin surface and may or may not cause discomfort. There are many factors that cause spider and varicose veins, including genetics, lifestyle and hormones.
Q: What can I do about spider and varicose veins?
Doctor: There are treatments that can reduce or eliminate the appearance of these veins. Sclerotherapy involves injecting a solution into the veins, which causes the body to make them disappear. Laser therapy can be used to target the vein and make it vanish, without harming any of the surrounding tissue.
Q: I want to improve the look of my legs, but don't I need these veins for circulation?
Doctor: Varicose and spider veins are no longer functioning efficiently; their unsightly appearance is a direct result of this. The good news is that, although these veins are no longer working properly, the body finds other ways to direct circulation.
Q. Is there much pain involved with treatment?
Doctor: There is minimal discomfort with sclerotherapy since only a small, fine needle is used. Laser therapy is relatively painless; the sensation is often described as similar to the snap of a small rubber band on the skin.
