A healthy lifestyle doesn’t have to be a sacrifice, says Glenn W. Laub, MD, Chairman and Chief of Cardiac Surgery at the Heart Hospital at St. Francis Medical Center. He may be one of the top heart surgeons in the state, but he would much rather teach you to “bypass the bypass” than meet you in the OR.

Dr. Laub understands that many people think of diet and exercise as necessary evils, not enjoyable pastimes. But it doesn’t have to be so, he says. One of the best ways to reduce your risk of heart disease is to enjoy life.
“I tell my patients to eat, drink and be merry,” he says. “A handful of peanuts has a protective effect on the heart when eaten a few times a week. Dark chocolate is shown to reduce blood pressure and contains antioxidants. And one to two alcoholic beverages a day can increase your HDL (good cholesterol).”
Moderation, of course, is key. Dr. Laub cautions you to watch your portions, especially when enjoying wine and chocolate. But help yourself to a second portion of berries, which are high in antioxidants and low in calories.
Here’s to good health!
