Walking is a perfect exercise choice for just about everyone. A comfortable, well-fitted pair of sneakers is all the ‘equipment’ you need. And it doesn’t take a huge investment of time: As little as 30 minutes a day provides heart-healthy benefits. People who walk for good health tend to stick with it. In fact, walking has the lowest dropout rate of any physical activity. You can do it on your own, make it a family affair or pair up with friends for extra motivation.
It’s easy to make a year-round commitment to
walking, as it can be done virtually anywhere.
When the weather turns cold, layering your clothing
and wearing a hat and gloves protects against the
elements. Extreme cold can be dangerous, though,
especially when the wind chill factor lowers the
temperature to single digits. In those conditions, find
an indoor route. Some shopping malls offer space for
walkers in the morning hours before stores open.
Why is walking so heartening?
Because it can help:
Get yourself walking and have a good time: Join us for the Heart Walk, sponsored by the American Heart Association. St. Francis President and CEO Jerry Jablonowski chairs this year’s event on Sunday, Sept. 13, 2009, and welcomes all walkers! For more information, call 609-599-6464.
