Low-Impact Aquatic Exercise Offers Big-Impact Results

Aquatic exercise provides the perfect workout for those who need a low impact exercise routine

Sure, it’s fun to splash around in a pool, but did you also know that water provides the perfect environment for low impact exercise?

Aquatic exercise is a great workout for almost anyone, from serious athletes to couch potatoes, as well as those with muscle injuries, limited range of motion or other disabilities.

Not sure how to begin? Try an organized class, such as aquatic circuit training, aquatic yoga/ Pilates or Ai Chi (water Tai Chi).

“Some of the faster water workouts focus on calorie burning while others are geared toward pain control and relaxation,” explains Sara Sommer, a physical therapist at Good Shepherd Rehabilitation.

Benefits of Aquatic Exercise:

  • Reduces stress on joints
  • Adds resistance for improved balance and muscle strength
  • Reduces risk of injury
  • Promotes circulation
  • Reduces swelling in ankles and feet
  • Burns calories
  • “The class you select should match your goals,” says Sommer. “Water walking is great for almost anyone.”

Good Shepherd offers heated pools for aquatic therapy and exercise in Allentown, Center Valley, Macungie and South Whitehall Township.

Consult your physician before starting any new exercise program. Good Shepherd’s aquatic exercise program is part of a medically based fitness program, and a physician note is needed for participation.
